Becoming Our Best
"DEALING WITH THE UNEXPECTED"
Recently I had the opportunity to spend a few days at Yosemite National Park . It is a rare and wonderful place, as many of you know from being there. Three thousand foot cliffs rise to the North, South and East, with roaring waterfalls tumbling down their faces. My hiking partner, Michael and I had made reservations at a new (to us) place, the Housekeeping Campsites. From the Internet pictures, these campsites looked perfect for our needs- walls on three sides, a canvas roof, beds inside and a fenced enclosure with an outdoor cooking area.
We arrived at Yosemite Valley late Sunday night just after a cold rain to find that these Campsites were unattractive, dreary, very close together and not at all what we expected. After much scrambling, we found space at the Tent Cabins, composed of canvas sides over a wood floor, with a heater and lone light bulb hanging from the rafters. Heaven! (at least compared to the other place!)
What did we learn from an unexpected experience like this? How about:
• Not everything on the Internet is what it seems
• Try always to have a "Plan B" ready for use
• Keep the big picture - what is our purpose here?
• Don't be afraid to make a move after a mistake
We found that the Tent Cabins were fine; and we were able to take some great walks. The hike to the top of Yosemite Falls was incredible! (2425 feet above the Valley floor, 7.8 mile round trip). Highly recommended!
